CLUB HISTORY

In 1959, Robert Weitzel, a transplanted Pennsylvania Dutchman, was working for the Atlantic Richfield Pipeline. Mr. Weitzel, an avid golfer himself whose golf career was cut short at the age of 15 by a broken hip, purchased a lot in the subdivision owned by the Stanton family.

While making that investment, Mr. Weitzel found out that the Stantons would be willing to sell the entire 90-acre farm for the right price. Mr. Weitzel met that price with visions of a golf course already dancing in his mind. Almost immediately, he opened a driving range on the property, and in 1960, construction began on what would become the original nine holes at C.C.C. Even as the infant project got off the ground, Mr. Weitzel turned his eye toward the future, purchasing more property on Barks Road for possible expansion. That property would eventually form the backbone of what is now the back nine.

As the original construction progressed, additional investors came in to back Mr. Weitzel's dream. That money made it possible to convert the Stanton's former dairy barn into the C.C.C. Clubhouse. Arden Curts and Jack Simms handled that project.

Caledonia Country Club was opened for play on Memorial Day in 1963. The original nine-hole course is the current front nine.

In 1967, Armond Burke and Mr. Weitzel bought out the rest of the investors in the course. Then, in 1968, Mr. Weitzel became the sole owner by buying out Mr. Burke.

With the course his alone, Mr. Weitzel turned his attentions to making it an 18-hole track. Construction of the back nine began in 1969, with the Weitzel family working on the new layout in their spare time. Many of today's current members were introduced to Caledonia Country Club as members of the rock-picking detail. Groups of youngsters followed wagons around the back nine picking up load after load or rocks.

In 1977, the back nine was ready for play, and Caledonia Country Club became an official 18-hole golf course. The spirit of that evolution continues now, with an emphasis on course improvement. It is up to the greens staff to make sure that Caledonia Country Club continues to change and improve.

A final change to the layout was made in 1995.
